Traditional French winter food

French cuisine

The French are known for their fine cuisine, and like other times of the year winter time is no exception when they bring out fine wine to sauté slow cooked vegetables and tender meats that are served along with fine cheeses and baguettes to compose the perfect meal for the cold windy season.  Like most other colder regions of the world, the French also enjoy indulging in warm soup recipes during the colder months as well as sweet and spice laden warm foods such as maple and apple sweets.

For a fine traditional French winter meal it would not be surprised to see a main dish such as roasted maple orange glazed turkey with the rich saucy glazed colour of the turkey warming the senses and the sharp aroma tantalizing every taste bud in your body. Roasted in a rich sauce, the maple and orange glaze is used to emphasize the rotisserie flavour of the bird and is sometimes used on chicken and fish dishes as well.

As mentioned, maple is also a popular desert flavour and do not be surprised to find plenty of maple sweets as well as dishes such as maple pumpkin pie on the desert menu.  Another popular desert option are rich caramelized apples which are sweet but not over done with sugar creating a nice rich and warm taste without succumbing too much to temptation.  Cranberries are another popular desert flavour and are often also infused into breads or pound cakes along with vanilla accents.
