Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day

Me and you, you and him, him and her, us and them, we keep score love as war, Valentine’s Day,’ James Taylor, Valentines Day 1988

Being Valentine’s Day recently, the 14th February, we are all forced to sit back and think about our past, present and future lovers. Named after Saint Valentine, this day should bring out the romantic side in all of us. So, on those special Valentines days where you do have someone close to you what do you do?

Despite always having a boyfriend at Valentines, I have never really been enthralled to celebrate it. Whether it was too busy or cynical I don’t know- maybe a combination of both. This year however, it had me thinking. I suppose, the cynical me thinks it has grown into being another day where florists and card shops capitalise on people.

The other side of me however realises that something that has been celebrated since 496 AD, made just to put emphasis on lovers relationships and affection can’t all be that bad?

This year I changed my mind about Valentines. I grew to be a romantic. I called my boyfriend and asked him to enjoy an early lovers day with me. I sent him the address and told him to meet me on the second floor at room 2.14. He came to the front door and I answered it in regular clothing I have had for a while.

As he walked in, I had all of the things he loved scattered out on the ground- even his favourite underwear of mine which he could have me try on. I had a chess set because he keeps telling me wants to play. I had his favourite 12 year old scotch whiskey and – what would Valentine ’s Day be without the chocolates? The entire day and night were a real treat and despite being Atheist and always ignoring holidays such as this, I made the most of it and reminded my boyfriend how much I loved him.

So, let me try to help the cynics in their perspective on this marked day. Why not make another excuse to get away and enjoy each other?
